The Art of Painting

A creative journey by Maisa Wardle-Dugan

Learning that painting isn't just about the final piece, but the process itself

Why I Paint

Painting is my sanctuary—a space where time slows down and the noise of the everyday world fades away. When I step in front of a canvas, I'm not just creating art; I'm engaging in a dialogue between intention and discovery, between what I planned to express and what emerges through the act of creation itself.

For me, painting serves as a creative outlet that extends far beyond aesthetics. It's a practice of presence, of noticing—the subtle shifts in light, the temperature of a color, the way shadows suggest depth and emotion. These observations sharpen my eye and mind in ways that ripple into every aspect of my life, professionally and personally.

How Painting Shapes My Approach to Work

  1. Patience and Process

Painting teaches me that meaningful work cannot be rushed. Just as layering colors requires time and consideration, so does thoughtful analysis and problem-solving.

    • Building compositions layer by layer mirrors building insights incrementally
    • Respecting drying times teaches the value of strategic pauses in work
    • Long-term projects develop both artistic vision and professional goal-setting
  2. Attention to Detail and Composition

A painter's success depends on understanding how individual elements—brushstrokes, colors, values—come together to create a cohesive whole. This mirrors excellence in any professional endeavor.

    • Small details create powerful cumulative effects
    • Balance and proportion matter in visual communication
    • Understanding negative space is as important as focusing on the subject
  3. Visual Communication and Clarity

Painting has taught me how to communicate ideas visually—a skill that translates directly to data visualization, dashboarding, and presenting complex information clearly.

    • Color psychology influences how viewers perceive information
    • Visual hierarchy guides the viewer's attention intentionally
    • Simplicity and clarity achieve greater impact than complexity
  4. Adaptability and Problem-Solving

Paintings rarely go exactly as planned. Learning to adapt, find creative solutions, and transform "mistakes" into features has deepened my resilience and innovation skills.

    • Unexpected results often lead to the best discoveries
    • Creative constraint sparks innovation
    • Flexibility strengthens both artistic and analytical work

Through painting, I've learned that creativity isn't separate from analytical thinking—it's a complementary skill that enhances my approach to data analysis, problem-solving, and communication. The qualities that make me a better painter—patience, precision, visual thinking, and adaptability—are the same qualities that make me a better data analyst and professional.

Understanding the relationship between time spent, creative output, and personal growth through data:

Tracking Creative Productivity

As a data analyst, I believe in measuring what matters. Below is a visualization showing how time investment directly impacts creative wellbeing. When we shift focus from passive consumption (social media) to active creation (painting), we see measurable improvements in mental health, skill development, and personal satisfaction.

This data represents a choice: every hour spent painting is an hour of growth, presence, and meaningful expression—far more valuable than metrics like "likes" or "shares." Analytics here serves as a tool for self-reflection and intentional living.

A Better Way to Spend Your Time

Explore data on social media usage patterns and discover is painting is a healthier creative alternative:

The Bridge Between Art and Profession

I believe that our hobbies and passions are not separate from our professional identities—they inform them. Painting has taught me to see patterns, understand composition, work with precision, and embrace creativity as a problem-solving tool. These are the same skills that drive excellence in data analysis: seeing connections in complex datasets, designing clear visualizations, paying attention to the details that matter, and thinking innovatively about how to communicate insights.

As I continue to develop both my artistic practice and my career in data analytics, I'm grateful for how each discipline strengthens the other—creating a more complete, creative, and thoughtful professional.
